I remember that when I was a little girl, BBC2 used to show old black and white films on a Saturday afternoon. I loved to curl up on the sofa and watch these, while waiting for the football results to come on, which were followed by tea. (Don't worry, there is a point and I'm getting to it) Although, I enjoyed most of these films (with the exception of musicals) my favourites were the old Ealing comedies, they had a style and charm that was very much a product of the age in which they were made, one which would be hard to replicate nowadays.
So, my question is do you think certain films are representative of a particular time? Do you think it would be possible to reproduce such films in the modern world?

Foreign Language Films: Dubbing or Sub-titles?
If you are a fan of films in a language other than your own, do you prefer to watch them dubbed (a sound track is added in your language) or sub-titled? If you have a preference, why?

This Week's Question: Controversy
Some films attract an air of controversy, for example Reservoir Dogs because of the ear lopping scene, or more recently, Hard Candy in which a young girl turns the tables on a child molester. What effect does this kind of publicity or subject matter have on your decision to actually watch such a film? Would it make you more or less likely to go and see it? Do you think some films are deliberately controversial to cover up other inadequacies?

This Week's Question: From Book to Film
Do you think films/movies which are based on books are always worse than the original story? Have you ever seen a film which was better than the book it was based on?
Post your answers on your blog, but don't forget to leave a link to the post here so that other participants can come and have a read. If you don't have a blog, no problem, just leave your thoughts in the comments below.

This Weeks Question - Directing Style
Finally, I return and post something of interest. The question for this week is:
Do you think directors have a signature? Can you identify the director of a film, just by watching it, without knowing in advance who the actual director is? If you answer yes to the first two questions, do you think this is true of all directors, or just a select few?
Post your answers on your blog, but don't forget to leave a link to the post here, so any other participants can come and have a read. If you don't have a blog, just post your comments below.

Update
It has been ages since I posted here. Sorry about that. I started this blog with the best of intentions, but you know what they say about good intentions. The truth is I forgot to post here so often, it slipped my mind completely. I think the idea of posting on a Sunday was never a good one, I tend to do non-internet stuff on a Sunday.
Anyhow, you may be pleased to hear I have decided to revamp the blog and bring it back to life. I'll post a weekly film themed meme type thang, and also some trivia and film reviews. As far as the reviews go, I'm not going to try to compete with the blogs which already review the latest releases, I don't get to the cinema that often and other people do the job so much better than I could. Instead, I hope to concentrate on the films (I think) you really should see.
That's all for now. Be back soon.
